Artist's Comments

This is the belt axe after having a handle put to it.

This little project taught me quite a few things about putting your work in other people's hands in order for it to be finished.

One of them things is that if you think your design will be respected then you are wrong, secondly, if you want something done good, do it yourself.

This friend this axe was meant for chose a rather niece piece of purpleheart which had been sitting around for years, therefore purpleheart tends to lose its purple colour but this one had an interesting grain to make up for it, however it seems to me that he fell in love with the whole piece and refused on all grounds to cut and shape the handle in a way it could complement the dimensions of the axe head, I tried the historical route by telling him I could show him how it could be hafted but he just came out with a stubborn Bauhaus argument that "if it works then it is beautiful"... pah!

So yeah I am quite disappointed with how the whole package looks as a result of his choices. Now I will have to make a new one to make up for that hmph!

If you want to see how ugly it looks and how good it could have been if only... then click on this scrap [link]

Looks good to my untrained eye.

It's important to learn the basics, before you can master complexity.

Has a wonderfully ancient feel to it!

I can definitely understand your frustration with collaborating. The piece clearly shows the touch of two artists, though I'm quite satisfied simply with seeing the axe mounted. Do you have any sketches of the look you were hoping to achieve with the handle? I'm very curious.

Well yeah it being hafted beats having to use it without a handle but still it is a way out from what it should be like. I did not have any designs but I have a similar axe head which is mounted with a shorter and thinner handle, as such there are plenty of handles which can be used to draw inspiration from with regards to proportions, as for decoration in the handle I was planning none as it is likely to suffer from handling.

Thanks for your comments

Well the idea was along those lines. I'm very glad you like it.

Great work on this, it looks awesome. As for the handle, at least you can shorten it and it wouldn't be too late to shave it thinner.
